Bio-identical Hormone Therapy: An Updated Solution To An Age-Old Problem For Many Women
Growing up in the Mississippi Delta gives a person a unique insight into the world other than a genetic appreciation for the “Blues”. It’s hard to ignore life’s inequities when such stark contrasts are all around you. My great uncle, a legendary small town GP, and my father, the local hospital administrator, strongly influenced the direction my need to “ Do Something” would take. My Dad made sure that my decision to enter the medical field began from the ground up…at the business end of a mop!
Despite this early exposure to the less glamorous side of medicine, my resolve while attending the Mississippi University for Woman, was undeterred. My medical degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine exposed me to a number of appealing specialty options but soon it was clear that Obstetrics & Gynecology was a great fit for both my personality and my plan to return to my home to practice (not too much heart surgery is done in a town of 8,000). Choosing the University of Mississippi again for my residency training afforded me a very strong exposure to both complicated obstetrical training and one of the most exemplary gynecologic surgery programs in the southeastern United States.
In 2004 I began to live my dream but after four years it became clear that if my personal and professional life were to grow, I would have to make a change. I gathered up my skirts, kissed my friends and family goodbye, and struck out to find paradise. When the opportunity to join a practice on Hilton Head opened, I jumped. After some time in this area I discovered that in order to have the kind of practice I wanted and give the level of medical care my patients deserved, I would need to create my own vision. In June 2010 I have done just that. |

Ramon McGehee, MD, FACOG
Born the son of a son of an Illinois Central Railroad engineer in a small south Mississippi town, I too, served my time “ Workin on the Railroad “ in my youth. I gained a deep appreciation for the meaning of sweat and the value of education. As the first in my family to graduate from college, my love of the life sciences translated in to a BS degree in Biology from Millsaps College. From there, Medical School called me to a life of service. Immediately, I was drawn toward the surgical specialties and General Surgery and Ob/Gyn in particular. Deciding on Obstetrics and Gynecology, I was fortunate enough to be selected as a Resident at the University of Mississippi. Though initially loving Obstetrics (a love I have never lost),my research study on Ovarian Cancer demonstrating the difference in care received by these unfortunate women when Gynecologic Oncologists participated in their treatment, changed my direction. I resolved for the sake of my mother, my grandmother, my daughter and yours, to gain these unique skills. I completed a Fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at MD Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute in Houston, TX before returning ,as faculty ,to the University of Mississippi.
For over twenty years I was fortunate to serve as Division Chief of Gynecologic Oncology in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. During that time, I was heavily involved in clinical medicine, clinical and laboratory research, and teaching at every level. In 2004, after retiring from academic medicine, I entered private practice with my wife in her small Mississippi Delta hometown. I imagine this experience was not unlike serving in the “ Mission Fields “ and certainly broadened my horizons.
In 2008, God blessed us with a move to Paradise when my wife joined a local Ob/Gyn practice. I have kept busy practicing part time in far away Dillon, SC and caring for our newly adopted daughter. The rest of my “spare time” is filled with a love of art and music. Playing tuba, piano, harp, and bass recorder currently takes second place to singing in the All Saints Episcopal choir, the Hilton Head Symphony Chorus and, God granting me the extra time, Hilton Head Choral Society. I have genuinely missed practicing medicine with my wife and anticipate this change with joy. |

Jennifer Burks, MSN and Doctor of Naturopathy
I grew up as 1 of 7 children in Massachusetts. After beginning studies on an athletic scholarship to UMASS-Amherst, I quickly realized that there was more to life than being a jock. I graduated from UMASS with a BSN and joined the USAF and served as an officer for 6 years; allowing me travel through the Southwest as well as parts of Asia. I specialized at this time in maternal and infant health, labor and delivery, taught infant stimulation and childbirth education. Following my Air Force experience and still seeking independence, increased knowledge, I completed my MSN at University of Texas in El Paso. Immediately following that, I was one of the first class (of 4 students) to complete Post Graduate Nurse Midwifery at UT/Texas Tech in El Paso.
Yearning to return to the East, I accepted a position in private practice in North Carolina and with my 2 children, moved to the small town of Valdese (population 4,000). It was a wonderful experience to teach people what I do, as well as, to learn the importance of patience, listening and developing trusting client relationships. After practicing in North Carolina for 13 years, I moved south, eventually landing in Hilton Head in 2006.
Still on my quest of understanding; not just how to treat illness, but why does it occur? How can I fix it root of the problem? I completed my doctorate in Naturopathy and began to integrate traditional with other aspects in my approaches to patient problems (such as neutraceuticals, hormone optimization, diet and lifestyle changes). I believe that every individual deserves an individualized approach. I am excited about the new advances in science and interested in continuous improvement of myself as a practitioner as well as for my patients and the community.
I am a member of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, currently enrolled in the Fellowship program. I tell my children that I’m one of those people who will always be going to school….
I have had the professional good-fortune to work with Dr. Blessitt in 2009-2010 and discovered we shared certain interests and philosophies. I am very excited to be a part of her vision. |
